In this workshop we will introduce the basics of the finite element method (FEM), a widely-used tool within, as well as outside of, computer graphics. In particular, we will consider applying FEM to animate deformable, soft objects. We will first introduce linear elasticity, before moving on to hyperelastic material models, and discuss some simple damping and contact models. We will also present a basic demo implementation and some 2D examples in easy-to-understand MatLab code.
